Human-computer interaction and computational creativity, from the creative practice to the commercial exploitation
[Тэкст даступны толькі на англійскай мове] From emails to social media and data mining, state-of-the-art information and communication technology has a central role in our daily lives. However, the commercial exploitation is often appealing for service providers, who want to offer innovative solutions to end-users, and also have the capacity to drive some market demand for innovation already. Instead, how can experimental artists and makers bring their often home-made but ground-breaking ICT solutions to the masses, and expect some profits in return? VIVO+ is a commercial IT product that draws from a 10-year research project carried out at the University of Kent in UK on human-computer interaction and computational creativity through mapping, performance, video and music. The workshop will present the experience of the team, in collaboration with the Master in Sonic Arts of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, currently part of the exploitation strategy.

The project:
Since 2004, a new category of music-related software has been proposed, implemented and tested through creative practice. “Wakeful” musical instruments are those whose interaction listeners may understand as musical. The term “wakeful” means here “sign-bearing”, in relation to the potential of computers and human beings to interact in terms of exchange of signs. Wakeful instruments may empower the users’ capacity for the interpretation of music in terms of agency, cognition and communication. VIVO (Video Interactive VST Orchestra) is an instrument of this type. The investigation has shown that its users experience a phenomenon of Collective Musical Embodiment. The University of Kent has released the software as open source under the GPLv3 licence. The research involved 33 artists across 11 projects, disseminated through 17 venues and 8 publications. Live Performance Meeting hosted a VIVO performance already in 2010 (Invisible Cities: Fabio Paolizzo & Riccardo La Barbera).
In VIVO+, the commercial exploitation of VIVO is sought by defining specifications of user interaction for the business sector. VIVO+ will be showcased at Expo 2015, as well as permanently at Academia Nazionale di San Luca as a new means for the visitors to experience the Academia’s collections.
At LPM 2015, the team will bring the new and the old experience revised, together in the form of a workshop and performance demo, thus anticipating the Expo event and the permanent installation at San Luca.

The team: Fabio Paolizzo, Master in SONIC ARTS University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, ITAC s.r.l., Leonardo Spina
Dr. Paolizzo is Research Fellow at the Dept. of Electronic Engineering of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Marie Curie individual outgoing fellowship, as PI for the MUSICAL-MOODS project to be carried out at the University of California Irvine and at “Tor Vergata”. Currently, he is Consultant in ITAC s.r.l. and Fondazione Ugo Spirito for VIVO+, a POR FESR-funded project. Paolizzo’s research takes an interdisciplinary approach, at the meeting point between informatics, musical composition and musicology.
The Master in SONIC ARTS program is designed to train graduate students in the implementation and management of musical products in the arts, with particular emphasis on technologies for music composition and all forms of entertainment. SONIC ARTS graduates will build their careers in fields ranging from arts to technologies focusing on music composition and sound engineering. SONIC ARTS actively supports the VIVO+ project, with human and technical resources, as well as know-how.
ITAC s.r.l. is a spin-off of Fondazione Ugo Spirito e Renzo De Felice that is involved in the development of new technologies for digital humanities research. Leonardo Spina is a visual artist who works as freelance art director, illustrator and web designer. He is co-founder of Studio BOD. ITAC and Spina actively work on the VIVO+ project.
