[Тэкст даступны толькі на англійскай мове] Catch up with my mind is a performance involving an interactive system realized by MaxMSP, and improvisers without instructions generating external sound sources. The machine analyzes the input signal coming from the performer, and a synthetic response is generated real-time in relation to what he/she is playing. No sampling is involved, for the performance aims to focus on the computer’s specific emergent behavior.
There will be two improvisers playing one after the other to underline the different relationships emerging from different styles of improvisation. The first will perform on a Crackle Box (a low-fi homemade circuit) and the analogic output will trigger the computer digital response, than a bass clarinet player will substitute the Crackle Box. In the last phase the Crackle Box will drive again the system, and the bass clarinet will improvise too forming a trio of computer driven sounds, analogic driving sounds and a third musician free to interpret with his/her creativity the best way to crash the tight dialogue between man and machine.
The interactive system is realized using the human memory as model, respecting the three standard classifications (echoic, short term, and long term). This three time scales are used to generate different level of understanding concerning how strong is the idea proposed by the improviser, and therefore how incisive the computer response should be. Although, the work proposed is not the mere imitation of the human brain activity. The human brain is used as a model because it is here considered the highest example of flexibility and adaptation, and these elements are used to create new and unpredictable behaviors that should result in the identification of the machine’s specific identity.
In this performance man and machine look for their own place, and their coexistence does not depend on the ability of one of them to steal the identity of the other, but rather on the ability to create a system where they can foster the discovering of their uniqueness.
